Pope Francis explains the reasons for the chosen start date for the Extraordinary Holy Year in his Bull, Misericordiae Vultus.

The immaculate conception represents the mercy that God had towards his children in order to choose Mary for the miraculous conception of Jesus and in making more recent history, the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of the Vatican II council on 8th December, displayed the church feeling the great need to be renewed.
