The squares in Rome have kept their original function of meeting place for both citizens and tourists. Of the most important squares we would mention Piazza Esedra, Piazza Vittorio the splendid Piazza del Campidoglio standing on the Capitoline Hill at the feet of which we find Piazza Venezia with its majestic Altare della Patria. From here, a few minutes walk down Via del Corso brings us to Piazza Colonna, Piazza Navona and the famous steps of Piazza di Spagna. It is said that no other city in the world has such an abundance of water and fountains. This is shown by the 11 aqueducts of ancient Rome and the hundreds of fountains and drinking fountains spread across the city.
