Gattinara, the name derives from "Catuli Ara". In fact, it seems that the city of Gattinara arises in the place where the proconsul Catulus Lutazio sacrificed to the gods the spoils of war won in the immediate area of the Cimbri in 101 BC Recent archaeological finds show that in this area has been producing wine since Roman times. Archives bishop of Vercelli is written that since the time of Charlemagne in the hills of the vineyards thrived Gattinara. It must have been a good wine if the Marquis of Mercurino Arborio Gattinara Cardinal, Chancellor of Charles V and wine-lover of his land, dared to present it to the Court of the King of Spain. The Gattinara wine, in fact, linked its name to this famous diplomat, enthusiastic admirer and indefatigable taster, who popularized it offering it a reputation as an effective means of diplomatic negotiations. Today the "Gattinara" boasts the label d.o.c.g. and is produced by extensive vineyards on the hills that encircle the town
