Fossombrone is the most important centre of the Metauro middle valley. During its long history, it has always been the administrative and economic centre for the surrounding populations, first as Roman Municipium, then as an autonomous local council and later as an important Malatestian centre (1334-1445) and the Urbino dukedom (1445-1631). Its economy, apart from its flowering agriculture, developed around important craft activities which were favoured by the possibility of using water from the Metauro. There was great development in the art of wool (carding, spinning, weaving, dying) leather work, paper mill, and lastly silk production. All this has modelled the face of the town and the community of Fossombrone: churches, elegant buildings, religious and civil buildings make up a town of artistic, cultural and economic vitality. It is a pleasure to go back in time today along the narrow streets, visiting the town's museums that are rich with history (archaeological Park; Vernarecci Museum and Picture Gallery; Cesarini Quaderia-Museum House). For guests there are three twin bedrooms with private bathroom with shower, air-conditioning and wheelchair access. The decor is simple and comfortable. Use of the kitchen is permitted. The town of Fossombrone is 20 kms from both Urbino and Fano, in a land that stimulates historic, artistic and naturalistic interests. Ideal for those who want to discover the beautiful countryside of Le Marche.
