Guide to Roman fountains: if you are staying in the capital it will be easy to find a favorite fountain! |

It’s difficult to find a visitor to Rome who hasn’t wanted to visit the Fountain of Trevi and participate in the famous ritual of the tossing of the coin! One always wants to return to Rome for the timeless fascination of the eternal city. Among the artistic beauties of Rome are also the many fountains of the city that embellish the most famous squares of the historic center. If you have chosen to stay in one of the guest houses Rome you’ll be able to organize a tour of the most stunning monumental fountains of Rome. Start with the Fountain of Trevi, the most famous of them all. Nicola Salvi created the actual look of the fountain in the first half of the 18th century after the project was initiated by Bernini and the monument was immortalized by Fellini in the film “La Dolce Vita”. A statue representing the Ocean driving a chariot in the form of a shell dominates the fountain. On either side there are two smaller statues that symbolize health and abundance.
If you continue your tour in search of the most beautiful fountains in Rome you musn’t miss the intersection between the via Quirinale and via XX settembre. Via delle Quattro Fontane is one of the most beautiful streets in Rome and from this important crossroad it is possible to admire the obelisk of Santa Maria Maggiore, Trinità dei Monti Church, the Quirinale palace and the Michelangelo designed facade of Porta Pia. The street is so named because at each corner there is a mountain. Two of these symbolize important rivers in Italy: the Tiber and the Arno and the other two are dedicated to the gods Diana and Juno.
Not far from this beautiful street, in Piazza di Spagna, one should not miss visiting the Barcaccia, a work by Pietro Bernini, father of Gian Lorenzo. With your back to Via dei Condotti you can admire the Spanish steps leading to Trinità dei Monti. The barcaccia was a type of little boat used by ancient Romans to transport wine. According to popular belief, a boat was washed up in the square during the flood of 1598: Pope Urbano VII commissioned the fountain in 1627 in order to recall this historic event in the capital. The fountain of the four rivers in Piazza Navona by Gian Lorenzo Bernini deserves a chapter of it’s own. The symbolism of this mountain has occupied art historians for decades. All we will merely say here that the monument represents the most important rivers of the world: the Rio De la Plata, Ganges, Nile and Danube. The Majestic beauty of one of the most beautiful squares in the world will move you beyond belief.
