Romantic Liguria: The Cinque Terre

Perhaps one of the most famous destinations of Liguria is the section of coast where rocky cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation meet. Here five ancient villages were settled and are better connected by train and a coastal trail than road which is intentionally hazardous (to preserve the environment). At the top of the hill, similar to some towns on the French Riviera, is the Gothic church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia in the miniscule hamlet of Vernazza, second town from the north of the Cinque Terre after Monterosso al Mare, the most popular with its busy beaches.

Less transformed of late is the suggestive Corniglia, the colorful Manarola, and Riomaggiore . Of these the last, Corniglia remains dedicated to agriculture and vineyards while the other two are more attached to the sea.

The Cinque Terre are connected byway of a panoramic trail that looks out over the sea. The most noteworthy and romantic section is called via dell’amore and stretches from Riomaggiore to Manarola. The beginning is well indicated next to the train station in Riomaggiore.
