Today Taranto is famous mainly for its military port and its steel and iron plants. During the splendour of the Magna Grecia era it was an important city contended for by several invasions. From the numerous seaside resorts in Puglia we would recommend as the prettiest: Mattinata, Ostuni, Otranto, Porto Cesareo, Vieste, Peschici and the beautiful Tremiti Islands. We would also point out the lovely town of San Giovanni Rotondo for devotion to the figure of Padre Pio. For speleology lovers or simply for nature lovers, a visit to the one of a kind caves of Castellana is a must.
