Informazioni turistiche Piemonte
Piemonte is one of the richest regions in Italy. It’s industrial development covers a vast range of production fields, from its food and wine production that is famous worldwide, to the car production of the FIAT company which chose Turin as its headquarters. However, Piemonte is not only industry and progress. The River Po, Italy’s largest river, starts here and is a strong feature of the entire region. Along its banks we find corn, wheat, and the characteristic Piemontese rice plantations.
The provinces of Piemonte are: Alessandria, Asti, Biella, Cuneo, Novara, Turin, Verbania and Vercelli.
Turin is the region’s industrial and commercial centre. It is also a city full of art and history. The origins of this city are extremely old. It would seem that Hannibal conquered it in 221B.C.
The most outstanding monuments in the city are: Palazzo Madama in the centre of Piazza Castello, the eighteenth century Regio and Palazzo Reale home of the Savoia family at the end of the XIX century. A breathtaking example of Romanesque architecture is the Cathederal’s bell tower. Right in the centre we find Via Garibaldi surrounded by beautiful eighteenth century buildings. As a final mention there is of course the Chapel of the Holy Shroud which keeps the Holy Shroud on its main altar and is visited by thousands of tourists from all over the world.
Cuneo is the biggest city in Piemonte. It was founded in medieval times and there are still reminders of that period in the Town Hall and in the Tower. The city’s true centre however is made up of the large nineteenth century Duccio Galimberti Square.
The most famous mountain spots in Piemonte are: Sestriere, Bardonecchia, Val di Susa, Valli dell’Ossola and Mottarone.
Piemonte welcomes thousands of guests every year and offers a wide and varied range of accommodation choices. Hotels, guest houses, rooms-to-let, self catering apartments, chalets and holiday resorts are available all over Piemonte. Youth hostels and camp sites situated all over Piemonte offer different possibilities for young people.
