Lucania, better known as Basilicata, is a small region that proudly conserves its ancient agricultural tradition, taking great care of its natural assets and countryside. Basilicata has only two provinces Matera and Potenza. Matera, famous for its “stones”, has been declared a world heritage by UNESCO and has a unique structure that is not to be found elsewhere in the world.
The modern part of the city is situated on level ground while the old town centre is situated on the sides of a ravine divided by the cathederal into two valleys: the Sasso Barisano to the north and the Sasso Caveoso to the south. Potenza is a political and administrative centre destined to grow with the founding of the university. Its old town centre is full of small streets and shops. A special mention should go to towns like Melfi and Castel Lagopesole with their impressive Fredrick castles and the enchanting Venosa which has one of the most characteristic old town centres in the area and was the home of the great Latin poet Orazio Flacco. Regarding seaside resorts, we recommend the lovely Maratea on the Tyrrhenian Sea and Metaponto on the Ionian Sea. At Metapontino you can enjoy not only the beach but also the well cared for archaeological sites that date back to the Magna Grecia.
For nature lovers and those who enjoy breath taking scenery a visit to the National Park of Pollino and the slopes of Mount Vulture is a must. Mount Vulture is an ancient volcano whose craters now house attractive lakes.
