Abruzzo is a mountainous region characterized by a series of enormous calcareous peaks and important promontories like the Italian Gran Sasso with its large horn and glacier. Such geomorphologic conformations make it one of the most untamed and interesting regions of Italy. Since 1920 the National Park of Abruzzo has included this area to protect and safeguard the flora and fauna of this incredible land. Chieti bears evident signs of the various Roman and Medieval invasions. There is enchanting countryside with a varied landscape from the Park of Maiella to the Gran Sasso and down to the Adriatic Coast.
L’Aquila is one of Italy’s highest cities and has a very harsh winter climate which gives it a unique charm. Its medieval origins can still be clearly seen today in the boundary walls around the city. If you are visiting Pescara you must see D'Annunzio’s house that contains memories, autographs and nearly all his works.
Teramo offers different possibilities and itineraries for tourists: buildings, squares and churches that were remodelled into Baroque style and then later brought back to their original medieval form. Abruzzo does not offer only mountain resorts. It has many pretty seaside towns on the Adriatic Coast, the best known of which are Francavilla al Mare, Giulianova, Ortona, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Tortoreto and Vasto.
Abruzzo, due to its geomorphologic shape, can also offer visitors thermal spas like Raiano and Caramanico Terme.
