The city of Florence is divided into four historic neighborhoods that are differentiated not only from their colors but also from their churches. The Santa Croce neighborhood has always been represented by the color blue and the area takes its name from the Basilica di Santa Croce. It is the only neighborhood that extends over both sides of the Arno. Santa Croce is without a doubt one of the symbols of Florence. It is one of the oldest Franciscan basilicas as well as one of the largest. Adjacent to the church is a convent containing two cloisters and many exquisite rooms including the Pazzi Chapel and the rectory which is now a museum that contains many important relics. The Basilica is one of the most visited sights in the city and greatly loved by locals. All the art works within the church are of the highest craftsmanship and you'll find frescoes painted by Giotto, Maso di Banco, and other important artists, monumental crucifixes, and marvelous 13th century stained glass windows. Michelozzi and Brunelleschi both left traces of their genius here as did the finest Florentine artists of the 14th century including Donatello, Antonio and Bernardo Rossellino who created elaborate sculpted tombs, alters, and pulpits.
