The history of one of Italy's most important buildings began in the second half of the 14th century. Credit for construction is given to Luca Pitti who entrusted Brunelleschi with the actual building. For over 200 hundred years until the first half of the 17th century it was the Medici who inhabited the palazzo, amplified it, embellished it, and purchased the adjoining gardens. When the last Medici died the building was handed over to another important dynasty: the Dukes of Lorraine who kept themselves busy by building the Meridiana palace and other important additions visible on the façade. The Dukes remained in the city until their exile. With the Reunification of Italy Florence became the capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy and Palazzo Pitti became the official residence of the Savoys who ruled over Italy. In 1919 the property of the crown was handed over to the state and Palazzo Pitti was transformed into an important museum or more accurately 5 museums within one immense complex: Galleria Palatina that contains works by Raphael, and Tiziano, the Museum of Silver, the Museum of Porcelain, the Royal Rooms and the Costume Gallery which is the largest museum dedicated to fashion in Italy where designers come to show their latest collections every year.
