The Venetian’s Venice is still intact in characteristic areas of the city like the lively Castello to the east of St. Mark’s Square. In this, the largest and most populated of Venice’s six ‘sestieri’ (neighbourhoods), visitors will find the colourful clotheslines hanging across the narrow streets, elderly people doing their daily shopping and children playing ball on the street. Castello (castle) probably gets its name from the tiny San Pietro island that was once defended by a fort. Crossing the San Pietro canal over the Quintavalle wooden bridge, tourists can enjoy the view of the workshops, quays, piers and buoys. On the grassy island of San Pietro stands the clock tower and the San Pietro di Castello church that was Venice’s official cathedral until 1807.
St. Mark’s was actually the doges’ private chapel until that date. Many visitors are so charmed by the poetry and uniqueness of the place that they return for the last week in June to take part in one of the most popular and authentic fairs in the city: the feast of St. Peter when there are food tastings of typical dishes accompanied by local wines under the cover of hundreds of coloured lights.

- authentic between a urban area
- bed: yes
- breakfast: no.
sometime late, sometime cold coffee, sometime old bread, moldy marmelade after days without refrigerator...
- 9 nights, but never cleaning the room, full garbage can - we took something with us
not our favorit!
